Those of us in the content business know that the first draft is rarely the last.

Writers are sculptors, above all. Our job is to chisel, hammer, cut, weld, and sand until multiple strands of material are fused into an organic whole. The trick is to smooth over the stitches and hide the architecture. That means good writing is actually good rewriting.

American novelist John Irving sums it up perfectly:
